FIRST FAA CERTIFIED ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM OPERATES ON AIR FORCE C-37A
Others Will Benefit From Revolutionary Improvements to Pilots' Situational Awareness
Farnborough, England, July 22 2002 - Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has successfully installed a certified, fully operational Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System™ (EVS) on an in-service Air Force C-37A. "C-37A" is the military designation for the ultra-long range Gulfstream V aircraft.
This C-37A is now based and operational at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. A second C-37A, owned by the United States Navy, is currently being retrofitted with EVS at Gulfstream's Savannah, Georgia, Service Center. Other U.S. military service C-37A's are scheduled to be retrofitted in coming months. The Gulfstream EVS will also be available as a retrofit on in-service Gulfstream IV aircraft. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) EVS certification for the Gulfstream IV and Gulfstream IV-SP is expected by the end of this year.
The Gulfstream EVS, which was developed in cooperation with Kollsman, Inc., will be a standard component of Gulfstream's state-of-the-art PlaneView™ cockpit, which integrates technological innovations that improve safety, performance of aircraft and crew and incorporates the most sophisticated avionics suite in the history of aviation. The PlaneView cockpit will be standard on all new GV-SPs, scheduled for first customer delivery in the fourth quarter of 2003.
"Our extraordinary engineers and program managers devoted seven years to the development of this safety feature," said Pres Henne, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. "Today our customers can benefit from their determination and Gulfstream's commitment to deliver the first system of this kind," he added.
Certified by the FAA in September 2001, the Gulfstream EVS is the first of its type to be available on a business jet aircraft. Addressing many of the items raised in the Safer Skies Initiative, it improves overall situational awareness by providing the pilot with an optical image that includes runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and surrounding landscape during conditions of reduced visibility and at night. The capability of EVS also helps crews avoid runway incursions and similar hazards.
"The Gulfstream EVS is a sign of our commitment to build the safest, most technologically advanced business jet aircraft in the world," said Bill Boisture, president, Gulfstream Aerospace. "Gulfstream is proud that this system will enhance the safety of our country's military and government leaders and we are equally proud that this system will be standard equipment onboard our Gulfstream V-SP," he added.
