GULFSTREAM ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM NOW AVAILABLE FOR INSTALLATION ON GULFSTREAM G300, G400, G500 AND G550 BUSINESS JET AIRCRAFT
Gulfstream IV-SP and V EVS Retrofits are in Strong Demand
SAVANNAH, Ga., Feb. 11, 2003 - Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), continues to experience strong demand for its award-winning Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System® (EVS) from new and existing Gulfstream business jet aircraft owners. The Gulfstream EVS is still the only vision-enhancing system of its kind certified to date by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and in operation on business jet aircraft.
With a current backlog of 36 systems, Gulfstream has requested the system's components manufacturer increase production to meet customer demand.
"This enhanced safety feature is generating a lot of interest," said Bill Boisture, president, Gulfstream. "Just as TCAS (traffic alert and collision-avoidance system) and EGPWS (enhanced ground proximity warning system) became standard components in cockpits, we expect that Gulfstream's EVS will become just as essential."
Included as standard equipment on the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G550 business jet aircraft, the Gulfstream EVS also is available as an option on the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G500, the large-cabin, long-range G400 and the large-cabin, mid-range Gulfstream G300 aircraft.
First certified for the large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream V (GV) in October 2001, the Gulfstream EVS has been installed on 25 GV aircraft. EVS has been integrated with the Honeywell SPZ8400 flight deck for Gulfstream's large-cabin, long-range Gulfstream IV-SP (GIV-SP). Installed on the first GIV-SP in August 2002, the GIV-compatible Gulfstream EVS was certified by the FAA four months later. Installation of the Gulfstream EVS on the first customer GIV-SP will be accomplished by the end of March. Of the 36-system backlog, 25 have been ordered for GV aircraft and 11 have been ordered for GIV aircraft.
The Gulfstream EVS incorporates a specially designed Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera that projects an infrared real-world image on the pilot's Honeywell Head-Up Display (HUD). Developed in cooperation with Kollsman Inc., the system addresses many of the issues raised in the FAA's Safer Skies Agenda. The system enables the flight crew to see runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and surrounding conditions. The Gulfstream EVS also helps crews to avoid runway incursion and hazards.
Since entering service, the Gulfstream EVS has been recognized by several organizations, including the Federation Aeronautique Internationale and Flight Safety Foundation, for its significant contributions to enhancing aviation safety. Most recently, the Gulfstream EVS received the Flying Editor's Choice Award from Flying magazine.
FlightSafety International has trained more than 125 GV pilots on the Gulfstream EVS and will begin training GIV pilots this year.
